Creative Play

These last few weeks I have found myself needing to be more creative with entertaining Søren. He does a pretty good job, for the most part, in entertaining himself with either boxes, tupperware or his new fascination, rocks! But he is wanting me to be more involved. How on earth do I play with a rock or a paintbrush, especially with a child that doesn't talk? So, I broke out the Play-Doh. With a few attempts to eat it and throwing it on the floor a few times, he finally got the hang of it. (putting the pacifier in his mouth stopped the urge to eat it.) I was fascinated by Søren's observation with this activity. If I would flatten the doh, he would try to flatten it. If I would roll it in a ball, he would try to roll it in the ball. I guess I have underestimated one year olds. So, I wanted to ask, what activities seem to work or you enjoy doing/creating with any 1ish year olds you have or know?

Do you have a farm playset yet? Like one from Fisher Price? I think I read that Soren is already good with animal noises, but when I baby-sat a 1-year old 3 days a week, we used to spend HOURS with his farm set...animals in the barn, animals out of the barn, animals in the barn, etc....all the sounds, what they eat, you get the idea!

I don't have a youngster so I can't say with any authority, but I have a friend who makes "sand tables" and "water tables" by putting either sand or water in a long, flat Tupperware container (could certainly be done in a smaller one). The kids can run their fingers through the sand or push their little Tonka dumpsters through it, or splash in the water and play with their rubber duckies in it.

We are looking into getting Corinne a slide (of the plastic sort) from someplace like Toys R Us. Corinne loves to climb up and down anything she can, and she loves to slide at the park. We figure we can use it inside in the winter in the playroom, and move it outside in the warm weather. Also, my friend has one for her daughter and they put one of those plastic baby pools at the bottom and filled it with colored balls to land in after sliding down.

Hey Linnea...I like your blog! I used to teach 2/3's and I know Soren is only 1, but he may like some of these (most you have to closely monitor or help with): shaving cream, bubble wrap, previous two together, painting with water outside on rocks, making crafts with cotton balls and glue, there are some really good kids CDs that have songs that you do actions to that are fun too! T, Melissa, and Betsy's ideas are great too. Take care! Annika

So many good ideas. I am glad you asked this question. We happened to go to quilt store and the gal there gave her an ingenious toy. She put a bunch of weirdly shaped quilt scraps in a shopping bag. Sage loves to get them out and lay them all flat or pile them on top of each other. Sometimes she wads them up, other times she just looks at the patterns. Remember me asking about toys at mom's group when "she" was "his" age? It is a tough age for toys. Erica recommended rice and a cup.
